What is Sickle Cell Disease?

Sickle Cell Disease is the most common genetic disease in the world.

It is most common in people whose families come from Africa, South or Central America (especially Panama), Caribbean islands, Mediterranean countries (such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy), India, and Saudi Arabia.

Although there is no universal cure for sickle cell disease, with effective treatment and appropriate medical care, survival rates and the quality of life for persons with sickle cell disease has been greatly improved.

What is Sickle Cell Trait?

People who inherit one sickle cell gene and one normal gene have sickle cell trait (SCT). People with sickle cell trait usually do not have any of the symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD), but they can pass the trait on to their children.
